“I think this might be you.”

That’s a DM I got on Twitter from a professor I looked up to as a university student. I thought he might have gotten hacked. But when I looked at the DM, there I was on a Billboard he saw.

How did I get here? Read on.

#1: Invest in your own self-promotion

No one is going to promote you.

The expectation that people will talk about you to others is silly. It’s the same mindset as saying, “Build it, and they will come.” It might happen once or twice, but hope isn’t a viable business marketing strategy.

In the digital world, you need to be your biggest fan.

How? Become your own marketing and PR agency.

I put myself out there. A lot. It’s scary and uncomfortable. And I know there will be people who don’t like me. That’s okay. I don’t aim to be everyone’s friend. I know it isn’t personal. They don’t even know me.

I’ve realized that you can’t be loved without being hated.
